A Concert for Women's Day
Performed on National Women's Day, this concert featured our sopranos, Jessica Lloyd-Jones and Caitlin Webb, and Theresa Dwyer and Alida van der Walt, accompanied and supported by Saeculum Aureum, John Jackson, and Garreth Robertson. All proceeds from the concert went towards assisting with accreditation for women in music education.
Inspired by the “and friends” concerts put on by Juan Muñoz and Mariel Illusorio. This was the first time Saeculum Aureum put on a concert in this vein, which included some solo pieces as well as our normal choral repertoire. The programme featured arias from the Messiah and solo pieces for piano and recorder interspersed among the usual motets, madrigals and folksongs.
Solo items in this programme showcased our sopranos, Caitlin Webb and Jessica Lloyd-Jones, as well as Theresa Dwyer, a local pianist, music teacher, and long-time friend of ours, and Alida van der Walt, a singer who has become a friend during her tenure at the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology. They were accompanied by John Jackson and Garreth Robertson.
At the time of the performance, Theresa and Jessica were in the process of establishing a music academy in Grahamstown, starting with a music program for pre-schoolers, where the children will learn the foundations of musicianship, including singing, movement and instruments. Proceeds from this concert were used for the expenses involved, including specialised training and certification.
