An Easter Celebration
After a retraction of some COVID-19 restrictions permitted choral singing in religious services, this concert was held as a celebration of not only the resurrection of Christ at Easter but also the return of sung music to the Church. The first half showcased Easter hymns, carols, and anthems, while the full third part of Handel's Messiah concluded the programme.
During COVID restrictions, John Jackson proposed a project while performances were still regulated. In our 'bubble', we started working on the not-often-fully performed third part of Handel's Messiah, with only five voices and piano accompaniment. The idea behind performing such a large work with so few musicians was that small-scale performances were often the only way for people to hear new music before radio and recorded music.
The programme outlines the Easter Story, from Palm Sunday through the events of Holy Week to the ascension of Christ to Heaven as depicted in the final part of the Messiah.
